Torre San Marco, testimony of the history of Agropoli
The presence of fortified towers on the coast of Agropoli, as well as along the entire southern Tyrrhenian coast, is linked to the threat posed by pirate raids. Following the general order of construction of an uninterrupted chain of coastal towers, issued in 1564 by the Spanish viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo, they begin to rise along the coast that from Agropoli reaches Sapri lookout towers at strategic points. Following this order will be strengthened the Tower of San Marco, circular in shape, the existing era, which will be joined by the Tower of San Francesco, built on a high ledge overlooking the sea, just south of the promontory above from the Castle.
